This cahoots thing with twins is a killer. The dynamic duo that teams up to do things that one child would never dream of doing.
With my singleton’s I had to baby proof the house, but for the most part that consisted of a few latches, gates and outlet plugs. Pretty simple Target baby-isle stuff.
However, with my twins I had to take it to a whole new level, I had to hire a guy. Like a legit Baby Proofer who comes to your house and basically locks your house down. People like this exist. Who knew! Now every cabinet in my kitchen, bathroom and hallway needs to be opened with a magnetic key. All closet doors now have sliding locks, the sliding pocket doors have wedge locks, the sliding glass doors have bar locks, bedroom doors have safety locks, a few doors have latch locks, all shelves are securely strapped to the wall, all floor vents are screwed into the floor…and we are officially in lockdown.
Baby proofing for twins closely resembles prison lockdown measures taken in a high security facility.
This wasn’t my idea; I was trying to stay one step ahead of the chaos surrounding me. One twin would be on one side of the kitchen pulling pots and pans out, while the other was in my silverware drawer reaching for sharp objects. When they started to be able to open closet doors, they would pull everything out. Picture every shirt, sweater, dress that was on a hanger or otherwise was suddenly on the floor. I honestly called the guy in a panic (maybe there were a few tears involved as well) and begged him to come over as soon as he could. Who knew how liberating it would be to have a guy lockdown every last thing in my house. It didn’t solve all of my problems of mischief, but it sure was a helpful start.
Living with twin toddlers is a constant cat and mouse game. My twins will figure out how to destroy something, and I will have to figure out a solution to stop them. Some days that involves duct taping whatever it is. Other days my husband and I will strategize a more creative way. As they get smarter and trickier, I have to hone my skills like those homeland security strategists to stay one step ahead.
I’m out numbered, but I won’t be out smarted.
